What C0161 means

The electronic brake control module (EBCM) watches the brake pressure sensor voltage, the vehicle speed, and a serial-data message from the body control module telling it whether the brake pedal is applied or released. It expects these to agree — pressure rises when the pedal is pressed and the car slows, then pressure returns to zero when the pedal is released. C0161 sets when they don't correlate: for example the pedal reads released but brake pressure is present, or the vehicle is driven above about 11 km/h (7 mph) with the brake applied for roughly a minute. It is frequently a plausibility/behavior fault rather than a hardware failure.

Symptoms

  4. Watch the live pedal and pressure dataOn the scan tool, compare the brake-pedal applied/released status against the brake pressure sensor value. Pressure should read near 0 with the pedal up and rise smoothly when pressed. Pressure that stays high with the pedal released, or a pedal status stuck 'applied', points at the switch or the pressure sensor.
  5. Check for a dragging brake and switch adjustmentMake sure no caliper is dragging and that the brake-pedal / stop-lamp switch is adjusted so the pedal fully releases. A partially applied brake feeds the EBCM real pressure with the pedal up and mimics this code.

Clear the code and complete the road-testWith any real fault fixed (or the driving habit corrected), clear the code and satisfy the clear conditions — drive above roughly 16-40 km/h (10-25 mph) so the EBCM re-runs its self-test and turns the indicators off. Make & model notes

GMC: On GMC models such as the Acadia, the EBCM sets C0161 (ABS Brake Switch Circuit) when the brake-pedal applied/released signal from the BCM disagrees with the measured brake pressure. GM specifically notes two-footed driving can set it with no fault present. Check the stop lamps and the brake-pedal switch before condemning any module.

Chevrolet: Chevrolet uses the same GM brake electronics, so C0161 reads the same way — a brake-switch versus brake-pressure plausibility fault at the EBCM that disables ABS, traction control and StabiliTrak for the key cycle. Verify stop-lamp switch operation and driving habits first.

Buick / Cadillac: Other GM divisions share this EBCM strategy, so C0161 remains an ABS brake-switch circuit fault. Because C-codes are manufacturer-specific, the same number on a non-GM vehicle can mean something entirely different — always diagnose against GM data for these cars.

FAQ

Does C0161 mean my brake switch is bad?

Not necessarily. Despite the 'brake switch circuit' name, GM notes C0161 is very often set by two-footed driving or resting a foot on the brake pedal, not a failed switch. Check driving habits and stop-lamp operation before replacing parts.

Can two-footed driving really set this code?

Yes — GM's own diagnostic says that applying the brake for about a minute while driving above roughly 10 km/h (6 mph), such as two-footed driving, will set C0161. Clearing it and driving normally often fixes it for good with no repair needed.

Will the warning lights reset by themselves?

The EBCM turns the ABS, traction, and stability lights off once the fault condition is gone and it re-runs its self-test on the next drive, and it clears the stored history code after a number of clean drive cycles. If the lights stay on, there is a real circuit or switch fault to find.

Is it safe to drive with C0161?
